What is the IABM Industry Index?

The IABM Industry Index is published each quarter and tracks aggregate sales and operational profit trends across the broadcast and media technology sector, based on latest reported financial performance. Through this, member companies are able to benchmark their own performance with the sector and region, and track emerging trends.

No individual company data is published, and the identity of companies in the sample is not declared. The information is derived from both published financial returns and via individual non-disclosure arrangements with selected private companies. Mergers, acquisitions, public offerings and other factors require the sample to be adjusted from time to time, but we ensure a representative sample is included with sufficient data for statistically robust conclusions.

Please note that the full index data is only made available to IABM member companies and so you must be logged in to view the Full Reports.

IABM Industry Index March 2010 - Executive Summary

Global Sales Turnover Declines but Indications are Positive

Global sales turnover for the 61 companies in this latest report (totalling US$8.7bn) has declined by 7.2% for the last 12 months as compared to the prior 12 months. There are indicators however that during the last quarter of 2009 the decline was halted.

Almost half the companies (47%) in our sample are loss making in this latest 12 month period, with some 29% of organisations moving from profit into loss.

Overall profitability has fallen by 12.5%, but the global profit to sales return remains at around 11%, reflecting again the structural changes that have taken place within organisations in order to maintain satisfactory shareholder returns.

The first three quarters of 2009 were very difficult for the industry but signs appear more positive at the end of the year. European based companies appear to be recovering faster than their North American counterparts.
