Volicon Observer RPM® at SCTE Cable-Tec Expo 2008
Quality of service and quality of experience have never been more important to cable and satellite operators. Setting the industry standard for video monitoring and logging, the Volicon Observer RPM® (Remote Program Monitor) gives operators a powerful competitive weapon by enabling them to deliver the highest-quality viewing experience possible.

The Observer RPM is an automated solution that connects to a set-top box and continuously scans the entire channel lineup, detecting video faults that would be likely to disturb the customer's viewing experience, such as:
  • Macroblocking
  • Black screen
  • Frozen video
  • No video
  • Violations of audio thresholds
The Observer RPM provides proactive monitoring capabilities at the point in the delivery chain that is most important: the output that viewers are actually seeing on their televisions. The Observer RPM is a true content analysis tool as it measures post-set-top box signals.

    Observer RPM® 100
Volicon will demonstrate a new entry-level version of its Observer RPM® (Remote Program Monitor) system for automated, multichannel signal quality analysis. The Observer RPM is Volicon's solution for MSOs, independent cable operators, IPTV, and satellite providers looking to automatically evaluate the quality of their NOCs/headends and remote hub broadcasts from a central location. The RPM 100 is a single-channel system that offers a subset of the core RPM functionality for monitoring the signal quality at remote locations. When the system detects a video or audio fault such as black screen or low audio, it sends an automatic alert to the operator on duty for resolution. The RPM 100 also includes Volicon's new QoE module.

Introducing: the Observer QoE for Macroblock Detection
The Observer QoE is a new quality assurance/quality of experience module for Volicon's Observer monitoring and logging system. With the QoE, the Observer is the industry's first video monitoring solution of its kind to provide an automated method for analyzing a video image to detect macroblocking, a process that traditionally has required human intervention to spot the on-screen anomalies.

The Observer QoE was developed in cooperation with several major U.S. cable operators to quickly and reliably detect macroblocking, commonly known as "pixelization." The Observer QoE employs advanced patent-pending technology, developed by Volicon engineers, to analyze video content and alert the operator whenever macroblocks are detected. In addition, the Observer QoE notifies the operator when it detects other transmission faults including black video, frozen image, or low audio.
