Casa Editorial El Tiempo in Colombia Chooses LiveU for Breaking News, Web Streaming and New Content Generation

29 May 2012

Casa Editorial El Tiempo, one of the largest and most respected media groups in Latin America, has chosen LiveU’s (www.liveu.tv) LU60 cellular-based video uplink solution to power its electronic newsgathering and create new live content for its City TV channel, Canal ET (Canal El Tiempo) news channel, and El Tiempo newspaper. Recent events already covered by LiveU’s LU60 include last month’s Summits of the Americas in Cartagena, Colombia.

CityTV, a local television station in Bogota, will use the LU60 units for breaking news, entertainment variety shows and innovative live programming. Canal el Tiempo, a paid subscription cable channel, will use the LU60 for news in Bogota, and other cities in Colombia. El Tiempo, the local newspaper with the highest national circulation, will use LiveU units to stream live content on their web portal (www.eltiempo.com).

Walter Gomez Zuluaga, VP Engineering, CityTV, said, “We bring about 16 hours of daily news and live programs to Colombia. As microwave links were expensive with limited mobility, we were not able to create new content in cities far from Bogota.”

Lorencita Santamaria, President, CityTV, said “Thanks to LiveU’s broadcast-video quality, compact size and mobility, we can now broadcast live video to our viewers from other cities like Cali, Cartagena, Barranquilla, Medellin and overseas. We can also create innovative programs, covering different segments such as marketing events up and down the country.”

LiveU mobile uplink units are used for live video transmission throughout Central and South America, including Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Ecuador, Honduras, Mexico, Panama, Peru and Venezuela. With its proprietary antenna array, the LU60’s proven stability and resiliency in remote areas is one of LiveU’s key technological strengths. LiveU’s use of multiple SIMs also maximizes the performance of the local cellular networks.

Giovanni Punzo, LiveU’s Director of Sales, Latin America, said, “We are very excited to be working closely with Casa Editorial El Tiempo to deliver broadcast video to their TV and streaming user base in Colombia. The LiveU generated content will be created from Colombia's major urban cities and remote areas. Our focused investment in Latin America has enabled us to adapt the LU60 product performance in each country in order to maximize video output through the various local mobile operators. The mobile cellular networks in Latin America vary from country to country and 4G is starting to be deployed in a few countries. LiveU’s LU60 supports 3G, 4G, WiMAX and Wi-Fi making it the most reliable uplink solution operating in the complex and evolving mobile cellular networks in Latin America.”

LiveU’s LU60 mobile uplink unit offers highly resilient HD live video quality with sub-second delay, providing sustained live video transmission in a range of scenarios, such as on-the-move, dense urban areas, and extreme weather conditions.

LiveU unveiled its new professional-grade LU70 uplink solution with its second-generation internal and new external antenna arrays at the 2012 NAB Show in Las Vegas.
